The 1960's- An Overview

The 1960's was a different time and place than where we are today. Back in the 60's popular music and cultural change was so tight no one could argue that music reflects culture. immediately after World War II, a generation of weary but proud American soldiers returned, got married and then started having children. About 80 million babies were born between 1946-1964, nowadays we call them baby boomers.

Music has always defined each decade either politically, culturally, or socially. War had heavily impacted everyone in this time period.  demonstrations, organizations, speeches, freedom chants, and drugs helped ease the pain of knowing that our american brothers and sisters were losing their lives in the fight at Vietnam. Drugs became, perhaps, one of the most influential variables apparent in the music of the 1960's.

60's= revolutionary decade. It took part in a lot of political movements, especially equal rights for every human not just specific ones. It was drugs, sex, psychedelia and protesting that made the 60's so historical.

This revolutionary period led to many new forms of music. Rockabilly, pop, country and rock and roll were formed and a major part of each protest and feeling towards the war.

Roy Orbison

He did all kinds of music including: Country, some Rockabilly, and pop-based rock & roll

Jimmy Reed

Blues artist, was part of the music group, "Gary Kings". He battled severe alcoholism, his wife sometimes had to help him remember lyrics while recording.

Elvis Presley

The King of Rock and Roll as we are told. Elvis brought a new sound to the 1960's era and it stuck.

The 1960's led America into a new and improved era. So much changed occurred within that decade, brought more people together, and let music live freely within each organization/group it created.
